Engagement and Roka Invitation Wording in Hindi and English
Roka, Sagai and engagement party wording for families and friends, with notes on who sends the invite and when.
6 min read · Updated 15 October 2026
The Roka or Sagai is the first official step. Two families formally agree to the match, exchange gifts and blessings, and often the couple exchange rings. It is usually smaller than the wedding, sometimes planned at short notice, and mostly for close family. The invitation should feel joyful and personal, and it often doubles as the announcement of the wedding itself.
Who sends the invitation
In many families, the Roka is hosted by the bride's family and the engagement by either side. Modern couples often host an engagement party themselves. The wording below covers each case. Simply change the host line.
What to include
- The names of both people, and often both families.
- The date, time and venue, with a map link.
- Whether it is a family ceremony, a party or both.
- Dress code, if you have one.
- An RSVP, especially if it is at a restaurant or hotel.

Announcing the wedding date at the engagement
Many couples announce the wedding date at the Roka. If you already know it, add a line to the invite or send a free Save the Date the same evening, while everyone is excited.
And save one more date: we are getting married on 14 February 2027.
Short notice etiquette
A Roka is sometimes arranged within a week or two. In that case:
- Call close family first, then send the link.
- Keep the invite short and clear. Nobody needs a long message.
- Do not worry if fewer people can come. Everyone understands a short notice Roka.
Ring ceremony and gift exchange notes
The ring ceremony is usually the highlight, so tell guests roughly when it happens. A line like "Ring ceremony at 7:30 pm, dinner after" stops relatives from arriving after the moment everyone came for.
If the families are exchanging shagun, clothes, sweets and dry fruits, the hosts usually plan this privately. Guests do not need details in the invite. If you would like guests to skip gifts, a simple line works: "Your blessings are all we need."
अंगूठी की रस्म शाम 7:30 बजे होगी, उसके बाद भोजन।
Your presence and blessings are the only gifts we wish for.
Engagement party for friends
Some couples keep the Roka for family and throw a separate engagement party for friends a week later. Send friends a separate, lighter link so the family invite stays formal.
Ring on, party on! Join Siya and Aarav for drinks, dinner and dancing on Saturday 12 December from 8 pm.
